Introducing a favorite summertime drink from my Amish youth, this Lime Green Slushy is a delicious treat perfect for sunny days, summer BBQs, and family gatherings. Made with lime Jello, orange juice, and pineapple juice, it offers a refreshing burst of lime pineapple flavor.
After freezing, it becomes a lovely slushy texture. Then we add a fizzy touch just before serving, making a delightfully cooling and refreshing lime pineapple slush drink.

Ingredients
- Lime Jello
- Provides flavor and color. Jello is a gelatin-based product that helps thicken the mixture and gives it a slightly gelled texture, which contributes to the slushy consistency.
- Sugar
- Sweetens the mixture. It also lowers the freezing point of the liquid, which helps the mixture remain slushy rather than becoming a solid block of ice.
- Boiling Water
- Dissolves the Jello and sugar, making sure it is evenly distributed.
- Frozen Orange Juice Concentrate
- Adds a concentrated orange flavor and a bit of acidity to balance the sweetness. The concentrate also contributes to the liquid content, which will freeze and create part of the slushy texture.
- Pineapple Juice
- Adds a tropical flavor and natural sweetness. It contains natural sugars and acids that also help in lowering the freezing point, aiding in the slushiness.
- Cold Water
- Dilutes the mixture to the right consistency, and it helps cool the mixture down faster, preparing it for freezing.
- Ginger-ale or Sprite
- Gets added just before serving to provide carbonation, which enhances the sensory experience. It also adds a bit more sweetness and a slight citrus or ginger flavor, depending on which beverage you use.

How to Make Slushies With Soda
This Amish Lime Slush Recipe is very easy to make. It requires some waiting time because it needs to freeze, but it's so yummy and refreshing! It will be well worth the wait.
Instructions:
Dissolve Jello and Sugar:
- Place the lime Jello and sugar into a large bowl or container.
- Add 2 cups of boiling water.
- Stir well until the Jello and sugar are completely dissolved.
Add Cold Water and Juices:
- Add 6 cups of cold water, 1 can of frozen orange juice concentrate, and 1 can of pineapple juice to the bowl.
- Mix everything well.

Freeze the Mixture:
- Pour or scoop the mixture into a 5-quart freezer container (or divide into smaller containers if needed). If you will be enjoying this slushy by yourself or only need a few servings at a time, freeze it in small containers.
- Leave some headspace in the containers for the mixture to expand as it freezes.
- Freeze for at least 24 to 48 hours. (Smaller containers won't need as long of a freezing time.)

Prepare to Serve:
- Remove the container from the freezer approximately 2 hours before serving. (Again, smaller containers won't need to thaw as long.)
- Using a large spoon or knife, chop the frozen mixture until it becomes slushy.

Add Sparkling Beverage:
- Just before serving, add ginger ale, sprite, or sparkling water (affiliate link) to the slushy mixture. (For less sweetness, choose sparkling water.)
- You can either pour the slushy into a punch bowl and add the soda, or fill individual cups almost full with the slush and top off with the soda.
- Large straws like these boba straws (affiliate link) are nice for enjoying slushies. Enjoy your refreshing slush punch!

FAQ
Sugar is a key ingredient for making the slush become slush. The lime pineapple syrup will freeze differently without the sugar, making it harder to break it up to become slush. For lower sugar content, serve it with sparkling water instead of soda.
Yes, feel free to halve the recipe. The juice can also be divided into small containers for individual servings of slush.
Thawing in the fridge helps avoid uneven thawing, where some parts might become too liquid while others remain too hard.
Yes, feel free to use any combination of flavors you would like. This lime slush has a distinct pineapple flavor because of the added pineapple juice. You could substitute the lime jello with pineapple jello to make a Pineapple Slushy.
Summer Slushy
Summer is a perfect time for slushy treats. They're so cooling and refreshing, especially after enjoying outdoor activities.
When I was with the Amish youth group, we often took fruit slush for an afternoon snack on summer outings. Whether it's fruit slush, a slushy drink, or a snow cone, they're all great treats to enjoy on a hot summer day.
I love making homemade slushies because they are healthier and tastier than the snow cones you buy at the fair. Plus, this Amish lime slushy recipe makes a big batch, so you have enough to enjoy lots of slushies, or share it with friends and family at your next summer picnic.

Delightfully refreshing!

Can this be made with orange juice instead of the frozen orange juice concentrate? I would need to make this gluten free and I don’t think I would be able to use the concentrate. Thank you!
Anna
As far as I know, orange juice concentrate is gluten free. My daughter is gluten-free, and she drinks this. I have never tried making it with orange juice. I'm sure you could use it instead of concentrate, maybe cut back a little on the amount of water. It may slightly alter the slushy texture, but it should still work.
