Why You'll Love This Hamburger Tater Tot Casserole Recipe

    • Easy one-pan dinner with minimal prep
    • Made with simple, budget-friendly ingredients
    • Hearty and filling - perfect for feeding a family
    • Creamy, cheesy, and crispy in every bite
    • Great for busy weeknights or easy potluck dish

    Ingredients (With Easy Swaps/Substitutions)

    • Ground beef is the hearty base of the casserole. (Can also use ground turkey, venison, or ground sausage.)
    • Cream of chicken or cream of mushroom soup makes everything creamy and holds the casserole together. (Cream of celery works too if that's what you've got. For better flavor, you can also use homemade cream soups instead of canned.)
    • Green beans make this a complete meal with veggies while also adding texture. (You can swap in corn, peas, or mixed vegetables.)
    • Velveeta or shredded cheese adds that creamy, melty layer. (Amish women tend to use Velveeta slices. However, Cheddar, Colby Jack, or mozzarella all work well here.)
    • Tater tots are the crispy topping that finishes it off.
    • Garlic salt, onion powder, & black pepper add simple seasoning for the meat so it isn't bland. (You can also use whatever you normally keep on hand and season your meat with - nothing fancy needed.)
Ingredients: tater tots, ground beef, cheese, green beans, cream soups, pepper, garlic salt, and onion powder.

    Step-by-Step Instructions (With Beginner Tips)

    1. Brown the ground beef - Cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until fully browned and crumbled. Drain off any excess grease, then stir in the garlic salt, onion powder, and black pepper.
      • Make sure to break the meat up well while it cooks so you don't end up with big chunks in the casserole. (I love using my meat chopper here.)
    2. Layer the beef - Spread the cooked beef evenly into the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
      • Don't pack it down too tightly - just a nice even layer is perfect.
    3. Add the creamy soup layer - Spread the cream of chicken or cream of mushroom soup evenly over the beef. If it's too thick to spread easily, stir in a small splash of milk to loosen it up.
    4. Add the green beans - Drain the green beans well, then layer them over the soup.

beef and cream soups get topped with green beans.
    1. Add the cheese - Lay slices of Velveeta over the top or sprinkle with shredded cheese until covered.
      • Don't stress about perfect coverage - cheese will melt and spread as it bakes.
    2. Add the tater tots - Arrange frozen tater tots in a single layer over the top of the casserole.
    3. Bake - Bake uncovered at 350°F for about 1 hour, until hot and bubbly and the tater tots are golden brown.
      • If you like extra crispy tater tots, move the pan to a higher oven rack and turn up the heat for a few minutes at the end.
        • Optional (metal pan only): If you're not using a glass baking dish, you can carefully broil for 1-2 minutes at the end to crisp the tops. Watch closely - they can go from golden to burnt very quickly.
    4. Serve - Let it sit for a few minutes before serving so it sets slightly. Serve warm and enjoy.

Tips for the Best Tater Tot Casserole

    • Season the beef well so the flavor carries through the whole dish - feel free to add your favorite seasonings (Be careful with the salt though because we already have a couple of salty ingredients)
    • Drain the green beans well so the casserole doesn't get watery
    • Don't thaw the tater tots before baking
    • Use a higher oven rack and higher heat at the end for crispier tops
    • Let the casserole rest a few minutes before serving

    Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Amish Tater Tot Casserole?

Amish tater tot casserole is a simple baked dinner made with ground beef, creamy soup, vegetables, cheese, and a crispy tater tot topping. It's known for being a practical, no-fuss meal made from basic ingredients that come together quickly in one dish.

Can I make ground beef tater tot casserole ahead of time?

Yes. You can fully assemble the casserole (up to the tater tot layer - add those just before baking), cover it, and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before baking. You may need to add a few extra minutes to the bake time if it goes in cold.

Can I freeze tater tot casserole?

Yes, but it's best frozen before baking. Assemble the casserole, wrap it tightly, and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before baking for best texture.

Can I use fresh or frozen green beans instead of canned?

Yes. Fresh or frozen green beans work well in this hamburger tater tot casserole - just cook them until at least partially softened and drain any excess moisture so the casserole doesn't turn watery.

What can I use instead of canned cream soups?

You can use homemade cream of chicken or mushroom soup for better flavor and fewer processed ingredients. Or even swap one of the cans with sour cream or heavy cream.

    How do I store leftovers?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer to help the tater tots crisp back up.

What to Serve With Tater Tot Casserole

This hearty casserole is a complete meal on its own. However, it also pairs well with simple sides like:

    • A fresh green salad (try my 7-layer lettuce salad)
    • Dinner rolls or biscuits
    • Applesauce or fruit

    About Amish-Style Casseroles

Recipes like this tator tot casserole with ground beef are popular in Amish and Mennonite communities because they are simple, filling, and easy to prepare in large quantity. Many Amish-style recipes use practical pantry ingredients like canned soups, frozen potatoes, and cheese to make quick, hearty meals for busy families.

While traditional Amish cooking is often made from scratch, modern Amish home kitchens also use convenient ingredients when needed. Items like cream soups, frozen tater tots, and Velveeta cheese are commonly used because they are affordable, easy to store, and help get dinner on the table quickly. (My Amish mom always had Velveeta cheese and cream soups on hand.)

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 350℉.
    • Brown and crumble the ground beef. Drain the fat, and add the seasonings.
2 pounds ground beef, ½ to ¾ teaspoon garlic salt, 1 teaspoon onion powder (or minced onion), ½ teaspoon black pepper
    • Spread the cooked and seasoned ground beef into the bottom of a 9x13" baking dish.
    • Spread the cream soups evenly over the beef. (If needed, stir in a splash of milk to make spreading easier.)
2 (10.5-ounce) cans cream of chicken or mushroom soup
    • Layer the drained green beans over the top.
      1 quart green beans, drained
    • Cover with cheese slices or shredded cheese as desired.
slices Velveeta cheese (or approx. 2 c. shredded cheddar)
    • Evenly cover the top with tater tots and bake, uncovered, for approximately 1 hour. (If you like crispier tater tots bake it on a higher rack and then turn up the heat for a few minutes at the end.)
1 (32-ounce) bag frozen tater tots
    • Serve hot. Refrigerate and reheat leftovers.

    Notes

    • Do not thaw the tater tots before baking - use them frozen for the best texture.
    • If you prefer lower sodium, you can slightly reduce the garlic salt since the soup and cheese already add saltiness.
    • If desired, you can replace one can of soup with sour cream or even heavy cream - (you may want to adjust seasoning to taste).
    Makes 8-10 servings.

Hi, I’m Anna. I grew up Amish in the Lancaster County, Pa. area (the heart of Amish country). I currently live in a small rural town in Missouri and am a homeschool mom to 4 great kids. Some of my favorite things to do are spending time in the kitchen, (baking and preparing meals from scratch), gardening, and spending time with my lovely family.
