Barbecue Sauce:
- 1 c. ketchup
- 1/2 c. brown sugar
- 1/4 c. honey
- 1/4 c. light-tasting molasses
- 2 tsp. prepared mustard
- 1 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 - 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. liquid smoke
- 1/4 tsp. black pepper
Burgers:
- 1 1/2 lb. ground beef (85 - 90% lean)
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1/3 c. quick oats
- 1 tsp. garlic salt (or use 1 tsp. table salt and 1/2 tsp. garlic powder)
- 1/2 tsp. onion powder
- 1/2 - 3/4 tsp. black pepper
- 6 hamburger buns, and toppings as desired
Barbecue Sauce:
In a saucepan, combine all the sauce ingredients.
1 c. ketchup, 1/2 c. brown sugar, 1/4 c. honey, 1/4 c. light-tasting molasses, 2 tsp. prepared mustard, 1 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce, 1/4 - 1/2 tsp. salt, 1/2 tsp. liquid smoke, 1/4 tsp. black pepper
Stir and bring it to a boil.
Remove from the heat and set it aside to cool. You will add 1/3 cup of the cooled sauce to the burger mixture. And the rest will be used to brush on the burgers while grilling, and cover the burgers when finished.
Burgers:
Combine egg, oats, and seasonings in a bowl. And add 1/3 cup of the barbecue sauce.
1 large egg, beaten, 1/3 c. quick oats, 1 tsp. garlic salt (or use 1 tsp. table salt and 1/2 tsp. garlic powder), 1/2 tsp. onion powder, 1/2 - 3/4 tsp. black pepper
Add the ground beef and mix only to combine.
1 1/2 lb. ground beef (85 - 90% lean)
Divide the mixture and shape it into six hamburger patties. (Remember that the patties will shrink as they are cooking. So you'll want to make them a bit larger than what you want the finished product to be.)
Place a piece of parchment paper between each hamburger patty.
Cover and refrigerate until you are ready to grill them.
Grill (on a preheated grill) for several minutes on each side. Brush them frequently with the bbq sauce. And spread the remaining sauce over the top of the grilled burgers or serve with the sauce.
Serve immediately with hamburger buns and toppings. Or you can place them in a covered dish and set them in your oven (at the lowest temperature) for several minutes until ready to serve.
6 hamburger buns, and toppings as desired
You can substitute the garlic salt or salt for your favorite seasoning. Sometimes I add garlic powder and seasoned salt instead. And feel free to add whatever spices you desire. (Just make sure to not add too much saltiness (about 1 tsp. of salt is enough).
If you like a sweeter barbecue sauce, add 1/4 c. sugar.
My favorite toppings are cheese, lettuce, tomato, sliced dill pickles, onions, mustard, and bbq sauce. (Jalapenos and avocado slices are good as well.)
