Amish cinnamon friendship bread loaf and slices.

Amish Friendship Bread Recipe

Amish Friendship Bread is a special type of sweet sourdough bread that begins with a shared starter passed between friends. The starter is used to create a flavorful and comforting cinnamon quick bread with a moist, cake-like texture. If you don't have a starter, you will need to make one.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup friendship bread starter
  • 1 cup canola or vegetable oil (can use 1/2 c. oil and 1/2 c. applesauce if desired)
  • 3 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 large box (5.1 oz.) instant vanilla pudding
  • chopped nuts, chopped dates, chocolate chips, etc. are optional add-ins

Instructions

  • Friendship bread begins with a fermented starter, so if you don't have one, you'll need to create one using my recipe for friendship bread starter.
  • Preheat the oven to 325℉.
  • Prepare two standard-sized (8 1/2"x 4 1/2") loaf pans. Spray or butter them well, then sprinkle the pans with a cinnamon-sugar mixture. (Mix approximately 1/3 cup of sugar with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.)
  • In a large bowl, mix all the wet ingredients in the order given.
1 cup friendship bread starter, 1 cup canola or vegetable oil, 3 large eggs, beaten, 1/2 cup milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Add the remaining ingredients and mix to combine.
2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, 1 large box (5.1 oz.) instant vanilla pudding
  • Stir in any add-ins desired.
chopped nuts, chopped dates, chocolate chips, etc. are optional add-ins
  • Divide the batter between two well-greased and cinnamon-sugar-sprinkled loaf pans. Sprinkle extra sugar and cinnamon over the tops if desired.
  • Bake at 325° for one hour or until a toothpick inserted comes out with only a few crumbs. It may take up to 10 more minutes.
  • Remove from the oven and let the bread rest in the pans for 10 minutes.
  • Cool and store in airtight bags or containers at room temperature for up to three days. Refrigerate or freeze for longer storage.

Notes

To create different flavor profiles, you can switch up the flavor of instant pudding or add nuts, etc.
For easier removal from the pans, feel free to cover the bottoms of the pans with a piece of parchment paper, then spray and sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar mixture. If the sides want to stick, run a sharp knife around the edges to loosen it.
