Amish Graham Cracker Pudding
Amish graham cracker pudding is a simple creamy pudding that's thickened with graham cracker crumbs. And obviously, the graham cracker crumbs also give this pudding its delicious flavor.
This old-fashioned graham cracker pudding is yummy whether served warm or cold. And I love it topped with whipped cream and lots of extra graham cracker crumbs!
You can serve it as a snack or a light dessert. Or do what my Amish mom did, and serve it with banana slices for a light meal.
Ingredients
- Milk is the base liquid for the pudding, providing moisture and richness.
- Sugar adds sweetness to the pudding, enhancing its overall flavor. The amount of sugar can be adjusted to taste preferences.
- Egg helps bind the ingredients together and adds richness. When cooked, the beaten egg contributes to the pudding's smooth texture and custard-like consistency.
- Salt enhances the flavor.
- Graham Cracker Crumbs provide texture, flavor, and thickness to the pudding. They also infuse the pudding with a delicious graham cracker taste.
- Vanilla Extract adds flavor, bringing a warm and comforting essence.
- Whipped Cream serves as a creamy topping for the pudding. It complements the sweetness of the pudding and adds a luxurious touch to the dessert.
How to Make Graham Cracker Pudding Dessert
This Honeymaid graham cracker pudding dessert is one of the easiest dessert recipes you will ever find. It's made with only a few basic ingredients and comes together very quickly.
- Pour 3 cups of milk into a heavy-bottom saucepan and sprinkle the sugar over the top. (Do Not Stir! It won't burn if you don't stir it.)
- Cook the milk and sugar mixture over medium heat until it begins to boil.
- While the milk is heating, beat the egg in a separate bowl. Then add 1 cup of milk and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the beaten egg, and whisk together.
- Once the milk in the saucepan starts to boil and rise, slowly pour the egg mixture into the hot milk while whisking continuously.
- Add the graham cracker crumbs to the milk mixture and continue whisking. Bring it back to a light boil and cook until slightly thickened.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- Place a piece of plastic wrap directly on top of the pudding to prevent a skin from forming. Let it cool.
- Serve the pudding warm or cold, topped with whipped cream and extra graham cracker crumbs. Optionally, you can add banana slices as well.
Enjoy your delicious graham cracker pudding!
Graham Cracker Pudding or Cold Bread Soup for a Light Meal
On Saturdays, in our home, we always had a big cooked meal for lunch (what we called dinner), then we had a light supper.
Two dishes that I remember frequently having on Saturday evenings are graham cracker pudding and cold bread soup.
My mom cooked a big pot of this cracker pudding for our supper. And if I remember correctly, we ate the warm pudding with banana slices. We all loved it and filled up on warm graham cracker pudding.
Cold bread soup was another Saturday night dish that I loved. I honestly have not eaten it in years, so I'm not sure how I would feel about it now. But I loved it as a kid.
This was simply a bowl of cold milk with sugar and vanilla mixed in, then just before serving my mom added a bunch of bread cubes and banana or strawberry slices. So yes, it was soggy bread soup, and that's what we had for our supper. (I've seen some recipes with coffee instead of milk - that sounds disgusting to me.)
Cold bread soup, stewed crackers (we made this with saltines and seasoned milk), graham cracker pudding, etc. are dishes that I grew up eating all the time. And I loved it all!
Amish Food
Some people think that the Amish eat some pretty strange dishes. And I will admit that a few of their recipes don't sound that great.
I grew up eating foods that my kids think are disgusting. And my sister-in-law declares that they turn anything into soup.
But think about it for a minute...
Amish ladies cook three meals a day, pretty much every day of the week. And most of these meals are made from scratch. They don't just heat a frozen pizza or chicken nuggets, etc. So they probably run out of ideas on quick meals to make.
And not only that, but many of them have large families and it takes a lot of food. Therefore they have to be frugal and stretch food where they can. And making a pot of soup (such as chicken noodle soup) is a good way to stretch food.
