    Chocolate Shoofly Pie Recipe

    What is chocolate shoofly pie?

I'm sure that many of you are familiar with the crumb topping, wet-bottom shoofly pie that is popular in Amish country. And believe me, I love that delicious breakfast pie!

    PA Dutch chocolate shoofly pie.

But the Amish also have a less-known shoofly pie recipe that is frequently made, which is chocolate shoofly pie.

And if you happen to be a chocolate lover, you will love this delightfully chocolatey pie.

Of course, since it's a pie, it starts with a traditional pie crust. Then you have a layer of thick chocolate pudding and a thick layer of chocolate cake that's topped with chocolate frosting.

Sound delicious? I say "Yes! That sounds amazing!" And trust me, this pie will not disappoint.

    Wet-Bottom Chocolate Shoofly Pie Recipe

This chocolate shoofly pie recipe has the familiar wet bottom.

In a regular shoofly pie, the wet layer is gooey molasses filling. But in chocolate shoofly pie, the wet part is a layer of thick gooey chocolate pudding.

And the main layer of the pie is chocolate cake, but it does include molasses or syrup of some kind.

Why Is It Called Shoofly Pie?

I'm honestly not sure why this chocolatey pie was called a shoofly pie, because it's really not even close to tasting like a regular shoofly pie.

Both of my sons don't care for shoofly pie. So when I told them that I was making chocolate shoo-fly pie, they turned up their noses, thinking that they won't like it. But I assured them that it doesn't taste like regular shoofly pie. It's a chocolate pie.

It has a couple of similarities to shoofly pie, with a wet bottom and a thick cake-like layer that includes molasses. (Although, I like to use King syrup or very mild-tasting molasses. You could even use Karo syrup. Strong-tasting molasses will alter the taste, and I'm wanting the chocolate to shine in this recipe.)

And this pie gets frosting on the top instead of crumbs. So it's quite different from normal molasses shoofly pie.

But, in my opinion, Lancaster County chocolate shoofly pie certainly is just as delicious!

    Chocolate Pie

I'm a chocolate lover! So, of course, I love chocolate pie.

And perhaps you are more familiar with the chocolate cream pie that is made with homemade chocolate pudding. It's good stuff! And I can never turn down a slice of any kind of chocolate pie.

But honestly, if given a choice between chocolate cream pie and chocolate shoofly pie, the shoofly chocolate pie will win every time. It's just that good!

    So Let's Bake Pie

Although some people get intimidated by the thought of baking a pie, let me assure you that pies are not hard to make.

If you don't want to or don't have the time to make your crust, you can easily buy premade crusts at the store. Just make sure to get unbaked shells for this Amish pie.

But making crusts from scratch is not hard either. And if you follow my flaky pie crust recipe (video included) you should end up with a perfect pie crust. And the more often you make homemade pie, the sooner you'll be a pro at it.

There are a few steps to making PA Dutch Chocolate Shoofly Pie since it has three layers besides the crust. But none of the layers take long.

And if you want to cut out one of the steps, you're welcome to use your favorite store-bought frosting as well. You can use vanilla or chocolate, whichever you prefer. But since I'm a chocolate lover, of course, I use chocolate frosting.

    • 2/3 c. water
    • 1 egg

    Top Part:

    • 1 egg
    • 1/2 c. brown sugar
    • 1/3 c. softened butter, shortening, or lard
    • 2/3 c. molasses or king syrup
    • 1/2 c. hot water
    • 1 1/2 c. flour
    • 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder
    • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
    • 1/2 tsp. salt
    • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon

    Chocolate Frosting:

    • 4 Tbsp. softened butter
    • 2 Tbsp. cocoa powder
    • 1/2 c. powdered sugar
    • pinch of salt
    • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
    • 2 Tbsp. heavy cream

    1 (9") unbaked pie crust

      Instructions

      Bottom Part:

      • Mix the sugar, flour, cornstarch, and cocoa in a saucepan.
2/3 c. sugar, 1 Tbsp. all-purpose flour, 1 scant Tbsp. cornstarch, 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder
      • Add the remaining ingredients and whisk to combine.
        1 Tbsp. butter, 2/3 c. water, 1 egg
      • While whisking, bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook until thickened.
      • Remove from the heat and set aside to cool.

      Top Part:

      • Cream egg, brown sugar, and butter. Add the molasses and hot water and mix to combine.
1 egg, 1/2 c. brown sugar, 1/3 c. softened butter, shortening, or lard, 2/3 c. molasses or king syrup, 1/2 c. hot water
      • Add the remaining ingredients and mix.
1 Tbsp. cocoa powder, 1 1/2 c. flour, 1/2 tsp. baking soda, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon

      Frosting:

      • Cream the butter and cocoa powder.
4 Tbsp. softened butter, 2 Tbsp. cocoa powder
      • Add the remaining ingredients and beat well.
1/2 c. powdered sugar, pinch of salt, 1 tsp. vanilla extract, 2 Tbsp. heavy cream

How to put the pie together:

      • Start by making the bottom part. Then you can make the top part while the bottom is cooling.
      • Once the (bottom layer) pudding has partially cooled, spread it into the bottom of an unbaked pie crust.
      • Spread the top part over the pudding layer.
      • Bake in a preheated oven at 350° for about one hour.
      • I recommend baking your pie on the bottom rack just below the middle of the oven. The top part is a cake-like consistency, so a toothpick inserted into the center should come out with only a few crumbs when finished. (Don't poke through to the bottom part since it will still be wet.)
      • When the pie has cooled, spread the frosting over the top.
      • Store, covered, at room temperature for up to four days. This pie can also be tightly wrapped and frozen.

      Notes

You can use a deep-dish or regular 9" pie crust for this recipe. A regular pie crust gets well-filled.
And you don't have to use my frosting recipe (I just added one for your convenience). Feel free to frost this pie with your favorite frosting (chocolate or vanilla, whichever you prefer). Or omit the frosting, if preferred.

Hi, I’m Anna. I grew up Amish in the Lancaster County, Pa. area (the heart of Amish country). I currently live in a small rural town in Missouri and am a homeschool mom to 4 great kids. Some of my favorite things to do are spending time in the kitchen, (baking and preparing meals from scratch), gardening, and spending time with my lovely family.
