Homemade Amish Peanut Butter Eggs are easy to make with just a handful of simple ingredients such as butter, powdered sugar, creamy peanut butter, and rich chocolate.
Similar to my recipe for Christmas peanut butter balls, this easy-to-follow Amish recipe combines the delightful blend of sweet peanut butter and chocolate. Perfect for the Easter season or any sweet occasion! These homemade treats capture the essence of Amish tradition in every delicious bite.
Peanut Butter Easter Eggs
Peanut butter eggs have been a beloved part of Easter traditions for many decades. While the exact origin isn't well-documented, there has been some indication that edible Easter eggs had their origins with German immigrants.
The popularity of peanut butter eggs during Easter has steadily increased over the years. Many families and communities, including the Amish, have incorporated peanut butter eggs into their Easter celebrations. (More about how the Amish celebrate Easter here.)
The combination of creamy peanut butter and chocolate has become a classic and anticipated treat for Easter time, enjoyed by people of all ages.
Ingredients
- Butter:
- Infuses a creamy richness into the mixture.
- Creamy Peanut Butter:
- Introduces a delightful nuttiness and adds a creamy element.
- Confectioners Sugar:
- Sweetens the blend, contributing to its desired texture.
- Salt:
- Adding a bit of salt enhances the overall flavor and helps to balance the sweetness.
- Chocolate:
- Coats the eggs, providing a lovely outer chocolate shell.
Each ingredient, in specific amounts, plays a role in creating the best homemade Easter eggs.
Variations
Feel free to experiment and create your own unique and delicious peanut butter eggs with extra add-ins. Here are a few ideas for variations:
- Rice Krispies Crunch:
- Add crispy rice cereal (like Rice Krispies) to the peanut butter mixture for a delightful crunch in every bite.
- Graham Cracker Twist:
- Incorporate crushed graham crackers into the mixture for a slightly crumbly texture.
- Crunchy Peanut Butter:
- Opt for crunchy peanut butter instead of creamy for those who enjoy the added texture of nut pieces.
- Nutty Blend:
- Mix in chopped nuts like almonds, pecans, or walnuts for an extra layer of nuttiness and crunch.
- Coconut Infusion:
- Add shredded coconut to the mixture for a tropical twist and additional texture. The butter could also be replaced with coconut oil.
When adding extras, start with less and experiment to keep the right consistency. If you add too many extras, you may end up with dry crumbly eggs.

How to Make Homemade Easter Eggs
Creating homemade Amish Peanut Butter Easter eggs is a fun culinary adventure that allows you to infuse love and creativity into your treats. Make them special by adding unique personal touches.
- Blend Ingredients:
- In a large bowl, blend softened butter and creamy peanut butter. Mix in the powdered sugar and a pinch of salt. This forms a rich, sweet, and nutty base.
- Chill:
- Cover tightly (or wrap in parchment) and refrigerate the peanut butter mixture for at least an hour to make it easier to handle when shaping into eggs.
- Shape Mixture:
- Once chilled, roll the mixture to the desired thickness and cut with an egg-shaped cutter. (I roll the mixture onto parchment paper and sprinkle my rolling pin with powdered sugar to keep it from sticking. You'll probably need to dip the cutter in powdered sugar as well.)
- Alternatively, you can opt for using egg molds or use your hands to mold the candy mixture into egg shapes of the desired size and thickness. Place the eggs onto a parchment-lined tray.
- Chill Again:
- Chill the eggs until firm by refrigerating them for several hours or put them into the freezer for approximately 15 minutes.
- Prepare Chocolate Coating:
- Melt chocolate chips or melting wafers using a double boiler. Alternatively, heat the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave, at thirty-second intervals until melted.
- Dip Eggs to Coat:
- Use a fork or dipping tools, and carefully dip each chilled peanut butter egg into the melted chocolate, giving it an even coat. Gently tap it against the sides of the bowl to remove excess chocolate. (If your chocolate is too thick for a smooth finish, add a teaspoon or two of Crisco shortening.)
- Set on Parchment:
- Place the chocolate-coated eggs on parchment paper-lined baking sheets and refrigerate until set.
- Personalize and Share:
- Let your creativity shine by decorating your eggs with drizzles, sprinkles, or additional toppings. (Sprinkles will need to be added before the chocolate dries.)
- Homemade Easter eggs are a delightful addition to any Easter celebration and make perfect gifts.
- Store:
- Place eggs into containers with lids, using parchment between layers. Store them in the refrigerator. (These soft homemade peanut butter eggs are best when cold.)
Chocolate Peanut Butter Eggs
What kind of chocolate should I use to coat peanut butter eggs?
The choice of chocolate for coating pb eggs depends on your personal preference. Milk chocolate, semi-sweet, dark chocolate, and white vanilla-flavored chocolate all work great. However, make sure to use a good brand of chocolate chips or wafers meant for melting.
There is a big difference in chocolate. Some of the cheaper brands of chocolate chips do not melt well and are not recommended for dipping.
Almond bark works for melting. However, you may enjoy the chocolate flavor of quality brand chocolate chips over almond bark.
Dark chocolate (chips or melting wafers) is my personal preference since it's not as sweet.
More Amish Homemade Candy
Many Amish women make homemade candies for the Christmas and Easter holidays. They share family recipes and make a big batch of homemade candy so there's plenty for the whole family to enjoy.
Kids enjoy helping and it's a fun time in the kitchen.
Some of my favorite homemade candies are copycat Lindt truffles, chocolate peanut butter fudge, cashew crunch, homemade chewy caramels, and peanut butter eggs.
Easter Recipes
I don't have a specific meal that I cook for Easter like I do for Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you have one, I'd be interested in hearing what it is.
However, there is one side dish that I make every year which is deviled eggs. For some reason, they are always part of our Easter dinner.
For dessert, I often serve my favorite carrot cake with cream cheese frosting or chocolate lasagna decorated with Easter peeps and chocolate eggs.
Similar to Reese's eggs, these chocolate peanut butter eggs are perfect for the Easter holiday! My Krispie peanut butter balls recipe would also be great for making Easter eggs.
